New York City-based band Crumb has set the stage for their much-anticipated third full-length album, “AMAMA,” slated for release on May 17th through Crumb Records. Comprising half-Malaysian singer and multi-instrumentalist Lila Ramani, keyboardist, and saxophonist Bri Aronow, bassist Jesse Brotter, and drummer Jonathan Gilad, Crumb is known for their unique blend of genres and captivating musical style. With “AMAMA,” they embark on their most carefree and open-hearted endeavor to date, promising a showcase of poetic abstraction and confessional self-awareness that resonates deeply with listeners.

Accompanying the album announcement is the release of its title track, “AMAMA,” which pays homage to Ramani’s grandmother. Infused with elements of her Malaysian-Indian heritage, the song exudes an upbeat and optimistic vibe. Ramani explains that the inspiration for the track stemmed from a video of her grandmother singing, shared with her over WhatsApp. The song’s melody and ethos were born from this intimate moment, forming the foundation for a glitchy, warped masterpiece. The accompanying music video, directed by Ramani’s partner and Crumb’s creative director, Abraham El Makawy, combines archival footage, home videos, and fan-contributed drawings, adding layers of depth to the song’s emotional resonance.
“AMAMA” represents a convergence of psychedelia, pop, jazz, and rock, solidifying Crumb’s distinct musical identity. Produced alongside Johnscott Sanford and Jonathan Rado in Los Angeles, the album serves as a luminous testament to the band’s quest for stability, connection, and clarity amidst the turbulence of modern life.
This latest release follows Crumb’s successful collaboration with Melody’s Echo Chamber on the single “Le Temple Volant” in 2023, which garnered praise from esteemed publications such as Pitchfork, The FADER, and Stereogum. “AMAMA” builds upon the cohesive trajectory set by their previous works, including breakout EPs “Crumb” and “Locket,” as well as full-length albums like “Jinx” and “Ice Melt,” the latter of which Rolling Stone hailed as “a captivating trek to the metaphysical and back down to Earth.”
Notably, Indonesia ranks among the top 10 most-streamed countries worldwide for Crumb, underscoring their global appeal and growing fan base. With the announcement of “AMAMA,” fans can eagerly anticipate more groundbreaking music from this innovative ensemble.
As the release date draws near, anticipation for “AMAMA” continues to mount, promising listeners a captivating journey through Crumb’s musical universe. With its fusion of cultural influences, introspective lyricism, and genre-defying soundscapes, “AMAMA” is poised to leave an indelible mark on the contemporary music scene. Stay tuned for the arrival of Crumb’s latest masterpiece on May 17th, as they invite audiences to embark on a transcendent musical odyssey.
