KLP48 Debuts with Diverse Lineup: AKB48’s New Malaysian Sister Group Takes the Stage

In a highly anticipated reveal, KLP48, the latest addition to the AKB48 family, has announced its first-generation members. This new Kuala Lumpur-based sister group of the Japanese idol sensation AKB48 promises to add a fresh, international dimension to the already vibrant AKB48 network.

KLP48’s journey began with a rigorous audition process that attracted thousands of aspiring talents. After three months of meticulous selection and intensive training under the guidance of 48 Entertainment Sdn Bhd—licensed by AKB48’s overseas sister group licensor, Superball Inc.—the inaugural lineup has been finalized.

This new idol group is historic, marking the first time an all-girl idol group has been formed and based in Malaysia, with a mission to make a significant impact on the international stage. The first-generation lineup of KLP48 will feature 13 members, reflecting a diverse cultural blend: seven Malaysians, four Japanese, one Indonesian, and one from Hong Kong, China. Among the new recruits are three transfers from AKB48 and one from STU48, another Japan-based sister group, adding a layer of experience and continuity to the new ensemble.

In keeping with the tradition of AKB48 groups having distinct identities, KLP48 will be represented by the color green. This choice is symbolic, drawing inspiration from Malaysian jade, and represents a fusion of gentle aura, empathy, and a blend of various cultural values.

The excitement for KLP48’s debut will culminate in a performance at the AKB48 Group Live in KL 2024 ~ First Cry ~ concert on August 18th. This event will see KLP48 share the stage with other AKB48 groups including AKB48 itself, STU48, JKT48, and QUADLIPS, offering fans a glimpse of what’s to come from this new and dynamic group.
